The Karnala Bird Sanctuary is located in Panvel Taluka of Raigad district, outside Mumbai, The sanctuary is centered on the historic Karnala Fort and lies just off the Mumbai-Pune national highway to Goa around 61 kms from Mumbai. The sanctuary is a home to over 150 species as residents and 37 species of migratory birds who visits the sanctuary during the winter season
This sanctuary is a paradise for small birds like Flycatchers, Munias, Leafbirds, Minivets, orioles, woodpeckers and many others. Also some resident raptors like serpent eagle, changeable hawk eagle can be seen here frequently.
Some rarities like Ashy Minivets have also been recorded here couple of years back.
The best time to visit this place is from Oct-Mar, as its autumn and most of the trees are flowering / without leaves which gives a great view. The presence of many migratory birds increases the bird density.
