It is a Hindu Festival celebrated with reference to Lord Vishnu. It is celebrated in the States of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Maharashtra and of course some residents of Delhi.
Dev Uthani means to wake up Dev or God and Ekadashi means the 11th Day. Hence the Dev Uthani Ekadashi literally denotes lunar day on which the rituals are performed to wake up the Lord Vishnu, who is known for looking up the well being of all human beings on earth.
As per the legend Lord Vishnu’s irregular sleep as being quite busy with destroying the evils pf devotes and showering blessings on them, disturbed the resting time of Goddess Laxmi, his consort. She requested Lord Vishnu Ji to regularize his sleeping timings so that she too get proper time to take rest. In the picture viewers must have seen while Lord is resting Goddess Laxmi is sitting at the end of his feet as if massaging his feet. On realising his mistake and truth in what Laxmi Ji is saying Lord Vishnu agreed to sleep for 4 months in a year on regular basis. Hence it is believed that Lord Vishnu Ji goes to sleep on Dev Shayani Ekadashi in the month of Ashadh and wakes up on Dev Uthani Ekadashi in the month of Kartik.
This year this falls on 8th November (today).
